The Oaks is run over the same course as the Derby and holds the same difficulties for the fillies as it does for the colts.

The first race at the Downs took place in 1661 and continued until the summer of 1779 when the Oaks and Derby became a reality due to Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, who organised a race for himself and his friends to race their three-year-old fillies over one and a half miles. He named it the Oaks after his estate. The race became so successful that the following year a new race was added for colts and fillies.
